We woke in Naples and decided to do Pompei.... left the packs at Naples station and set off with a set of great instructions which we totally failed to follow...... ending up with 2 Brits on a little suburban train into the middle of nowhere. In the end we got off (at an unmanned deserted station with nothing helpful like a timetable on the wall), crossed the tracks and waited for a train back!! We accosted a passing local number 1 who said 5 minutes (but we don't think he understood the question) - and 20 minutes later local number 2 said 20 minutes...... We were more inclined to beleve him as he also seemed to be waiting for a train. Eventually made it back to Pompei & negotiated our way to old Pompei which we enjoyed very much. Then back to Naples on the proper train. Naples is certainly lively but they have a real tagging problem which rather spoils its charm.
We took a fast train to Rome, and then another one further North to somewhere whose name I have forgotten and then a little local train for 15 minutes to near our accomodation. Arriving at the station we rang the hostel who picked us up 10 minutes later. Amazing hostel right near edge of Lake Trasimeno (Umbria). (Threatened the first offspring who said "we could have gone to Taupo for a few days" with painful things or loss of passport!!).
Today is a bit cooler and overcast so we will wake a walk along side the lake - a hiking/cycle track exists in both directions from us. Then the plan is to do day trips from here back to Rome, and to Florence & Pisa. When we have resized some of the photos we will upload some more.
